Spiritual care has many challenges. This is particularly so when people we love come close to the end of their earthly life. As members of the Peace Hospice team we continue to bring hope to the critically ill. There comes a time when the Lord makes it clear that the hope we bring is no longer for physical healing, but for the eternal home.
Peace Hospice, as an organization, can help terminally ill people deal with the end-stage of their diseases: Alzheimer’s, dementia, kidney disease, liver disease, HIV/AIDS, heart disease, untreatable cancer and general old-age conditions that are not specific or diagnosed. We also are ready to be with you in the heart-rending terminal illnesses of children and youth. We partner with patients, their families and friends, as well as their own religious institutions in giving spiritual, social, emotional, cultural and physical care. We serve all people — regardless of their religion or faith.
Our staff members find their strength in their own faith
It is a strength we draw on constantly as we serve patients and their families in their times of need. For our entire team, Hospice is not just a job; it is our calling, and we consider it an honor to minister to our patients and their loved ones. Hospice care comes into play when traditional medicine no longer gives any promise of cure. Care under the auspices of Hospice then becomes palliative with the focus on relieving pain, providing comfort care and giving the best possible quality of life.
As a chaplain for Peace Hospice, I have found that many people wait till they are very near to the end of their life before they enter into Hospice care. That is unfortunate because an earlier entrance into Hospice care can often give much better quality of life for patients and caregivers. Going into hospice care is not a sign of giving up on life, or letting go of faith in God’s power to heal. To the end, we believe that God holds our future. But we do not need to make that future more difficult than it is. Going into Hospice care sooner rather than later is a decision to make the best of that time which — according to God’s will — remains for us here on earth.
